| This year the AAA Foundation will be celebrating our 60th anniversary. Over that time the Foundation has amassed an impressive record of safety accomplishments on virtually every major traffic safety issue. In reviewing those accomplishments, we are both inspired and compelled. Our resolve to ensure the safety of motorists and pedestrians has never been stronger. We are emboldened to not only continue our work but to expand and strengthen it, laying the groundwork for another 60 years of safety research and education.
At the heart of those plans is our new strategic focus on four long-term program areas:
- Safety Culture;
- U.S. Road Assessment Program (usRAP) and Road Safety;
- Driver Education, Testing and Licensing; and
- Senior Safety and Mobility.
In each area we hope to sustain a multi-year program of research and development that will support public awareness campaigns, feed public education and assist with advocacy efforts, that will lead to real world improvements. This new focus is reflected in our new slate of 2006 projects that include:
- Documenting best practices, based on science, to support driver license renewal policies for older drivers.
- Launching a new program to conduct surveys assessing public attitudes, beliefs and behaviors with respect to traffic safety.
- Expanding usRAP, which rates the relative risk of roads, into more states.
- Managing a large-scale evaluation of driver education programs in several jurisdictions.
You’ll hear more about each project in future e-newsletters once each new project is underway. And as always, we’d love to hear from you regarding opportunities to collaborate!
Best regards,
