Last month we released the initial results of our Traffic Safety Culture Index that was based on a comprehensive national survey. It provided a unique assessment of driver’s attitudes, beliefs, knowledge and behaviors. And, what we found was an interesting mix of results. For example, we learned that 62% of respondents rated road (traffic) safety as a serious concern, which was greater than support for global warming, but only 33% had confidence that government could help. We also found that a substantial proportion of the population has been personally touched by a serious traffic crash. Nearly one in four respondents reported having been injured in a crash at some point in their lives and nearly one in three respondents reported having had a family member, a relative, or a friend permanently disabled or killed in a crash at some point in their lives. And, motorist rated various risky driving behaviors as serious problems. Nevertheless, most drivers admitted to texting and talking on the cell phone while driving, running red lights, and speeding. The details of this “Do as I say, not as I do” attitude are explored later in this newsletter and the fact sheet that we released.
The AAA Foundation took on our “safety culture” initiative because motorists, citizens and society in general are too complacent regarding the public crisis associated with motor vehicle crashes. One death should be unacceptable; so, why aren’t we outraged at one death every thirteen minutes?
