Foundation Report Highlights Senior Transportation Options

The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety released a report in July identifying various transportation options for seniors who can no longer drive. Among other information, “Supplemental Transportation Programs for Seniors: A Report on STPs in America” highlights “PasRide” -- an 18-month project in Pasadena, Calif., that successfully tested a low-cost, low-maintenance “volunteer friends” transportation model that can be adapted to other communities. Over a dozen such programs have been started elsewhere.

The report is a follow-up to a 2001 AAA Foundation study focusing on senior transportation options. That report provides information on over 400 STPs that exist throughout the country. For more information, access the foundation's online senior information clearinghouse, www.seniordrivers.org , which now features a listing of supplemental transportation programs throughout the country. The full report, fact sheet, PowerPoint presentation and press release are available on-line at http://www.aaafoundation.org/pdf/STP2.pdf .
