over the counter medication use and driving
- 630 adults age 55 and older, with an average age of 70.4 years, were
interviewed in Alabama from September to December 2007
- 92% of those surveyed said driving was their preferred method of transportation and 60% said they drove
6 or 7 days per week

- 95% reported having had 1 or medical conditions – respondents 75+
reported having the most medical conditions as well as taking the most
potentially driver impairing medications (include ACE inhibitors,
sedatives, and beta blockers)
- 78% reported using 1 or more medications, but only 28% acknowledged some
awareness of the potential impact of these medications on driving
performance
- 19% reported using 5 or more medications and 12.1% reported using 5 or
more prescriptions medications

- Just 18% received warning about potentially driver impairing medications
from a healthcare professional
- However, 69% currently use 1 or more prescription potentially driver
impairing medication and 10% currently use 5 or more of these
medications.
- Of those using 5 or more potentially driver impairing medications, only
22% had an awareness of the impact and just 19% had received a warning
from a healthcare professional
