Evaluating New Jersey's Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) System: A Model for the Nation? New Jersey possesses one of the strictest GDL implementations in the country. A cursory examination of New Jersey's teen crash risk showed promising results, necessitating a more in-depth examination to determine the true impact of its GDL laws. The study revealed significant reductions in crashes, injuries and deaths among 17 and 18-year olds, indicating New Jersey may indeed be a good model for other states to follow.

Guidelines for Evaluating Driver Education Programs is a three-volume set of guidelines for conducting thorough evaluations of driver education programs for beginning drivers.
- The Management Overview provides a high-level overview of why evaluation is important and what is involved in conducting a sound evaluation.
- The How-to Guide provides a hands-on manual for a driving school conducting a basic evaluation of its own program.
- The Comprehensive Guidelines provides both theoretical grounding in evaluation research and step-by-step guidance for the most rigorous, intensive level of evaluation. This is intended to serve as a reference for researchers and professional evaluators.

Driver Licensing Policy and Practices - As a follow-up to the License Policy workshop, the Foundation began work on a project documenting North American driver's license agency approaches for improving safety for older and medically at-risk drivers. The project surveyed state and provincial licensing officials to obtain updated information on current policies and practices. Additional detail was gathered on promising or innovative programs and activities that might be replicated elsewhere. Both the policies/practices and noteworthy initiatives are summarized in a searchable online database for use by driver licensing officials, policy makers, aging services providers, researchers, and media personnel, as well as older adults and their families.

 |
Older Adults’ Knowledge About Medications That Can Impact Driving - Using a cross-sectional survey this project provided information regarding senior drivers knowledge of the potential impact that prescription and over the counter medication use has on their ability to safely operate a motor vehicle. The study yielded new information about knowledge, beliefs, and behaviors of people age 55 and over with respect to medications and driving.

 |
Use of Advanced In-Vehicle Technology by Younger and Older Early Adopters surveyed thousands of drivers, a large proportion of whom are seniors, to gain insight into their understanding, acceptance, and use of four specific relatively newer in-vehicle technologies.
|
 |
North American Driver Licensing Policy Workshop - The AAA Foundation hosted an expert workshop to:
- Synthesize the present state of knowledge regarding the identification and screening of and interventions for high-risk drivers as it relates to the ability of aging drivers to continue to drive safely,
- Develop a consensus-based set of recommendations
- Identify the most important knowledge gaps and research needs related to older driver safety

controlled study of the impact of a driver training course, consisting of
both classroom-based and behind-the-wheel instruction, on the driving skills
and knowledge of senior drivers."

Pedestrian Signal Safety for Older Persons analyzes the walking speeds of
older and younger pedestrians in six communities and reports the results of
simulation-based case studies that investigate whether traffic signals can
allow more time for pedestrians to cross the street without causing great
increases in delay for vehicles.

Safety Impacts of Pavement Edge Drop-Offs examines the prevalence of pavement edge drop-off—a condition in which the shoulder or the edge of the road is lower than the paved travel lane—in several states, and also surveys state practices for monitoring and repairing drop-off, and assesses the relationship between drop-off depth and crash risk. The report also includes recommendations from the project’s advisory panel of experts and stakeholders.
