Research has demonstrated the need for culturally and linguistically appropriate educational materials targeting Spanish-speaking audiences. However, there are no adequate guidelines for developing materials that will resonate with the growing non-English speaking Latino population .
This project will gather existing Spanish-language traffic safety educational materials that have been used in the U.S., in order to gain an understanding of who produces the materials, what topics are addressed, and what steps have been taken to ensure accuracy and cultural appropriateness. The project team will examine the existing materials; survey the developers of the materials; work with an advisory group of experts in traffic safety, injury prevention, health communication, and cultural issues to develop a set of guidelines for producing effective Spanish-language traffic safety educational materials; and develop a “model material” that addresses pedestrian safety issues in western Massachusetts. AAAFTS staff and NHSTA then plan to adapt the local material for a broader regional or national audience
